Easy distressed sign tutorial

Happy Monday! I am so excited to be sharing this tutorial with you. I had this project on my to-do list for quite some time but wanted to come up with the easiest way to get perfect letters on wood without  using a silhouette,projector or rubbing technique ect.  This is even easier and anyone can do it!

 

 

Here is what I used

 

Black paint

Gray Paint

White paint

Aqua Paint

(or any paint colors of your choice to layer)

printer

foam paint brush

small paint brushes

wood board

 pen

tape

sandpaper

 2 sawtooth picture hangers

 

I found the 4ft board at Lowes towards the fencing boards. This piece was already super smooth and had clean straight edges. No sanding was needed!

 

 

 

First I gathered a few paint cans that I had to see what colors I wanted to use.

 

I chose gray,black,aqua and white.

 

 

 

Dry brush the gray paint on with a foam paint brush. Make sure you paint all the edges too.

 

Then dry brush black paint on all the corners, edges and lightly over the gray. Do NOT make it comepletely black.. Just slightly graze it over the board.

 

 

Then I dry brushed white over the gray and black.

Then aqua over the white then a teeny tiny bit more black.

 

Make sure you let each paint coat dry in between each coat.

 

 

Then print out on the computer the words that you want on your sign. I did each letter individually and all the letters the same exact size. I chose to use Times New Roman so that there was a straight line on top and bottom of the letter so I could cut each letter the same size.

 

 

I cut each letter and spaced them out evenly then taped the tops so they all stayed in place.

 

Then take your pen and press firmly while tracing the letters right over the wood.

 

This will etch the letters into the wood.

 

 

This is what you will end up with. See how the letters are etched in the wood?

 

SUPER EASY! You can print out anything and just press it right into the wood! 

 

Then go over the etched letters with your pen.

 

 

 paint and fill in  the letters with a very small paint brush and black paint.

 

I quickly realized it needed a little something else so I printed out this fleur de lis and etched it on the wood then painted it!

 

After all the letters are painted then take your piece od sand paper and distress away!!

 

 

To hang it up I used 2 sawtooth picture hangers with small nails on each end of the board

 

 



I can now check this project off my kitchen list that is a mile long! I hung this up over my kitchen window that is over my sink. There is still so much to do like paint cabinets, and make an awesome roman shade for this window with awesome fabric!
